Being from a typical Minnesota suburb, I grew up eating at the same boring chain restaurants. Over the years I have realized most chain restaurants have crap for food. I have definitely grown to appreciate unique, high quality restaurants. After being absent from the Twin Cities for college, I have yet to discover many restaurants in the area. So, naturally I wanted to find out the “hot spots.”
After doing a little research using my favorite tools, yelp and urbanspoon, I found Bar la Grassa in Minneapolis. Bar la Grassa has many rave reviews. In 2010, Bon Appetit Magazine named it one of the “The 10 best new restaurants in America” (http://www.bonappetit.com/columns/the-foodist/article/the-10-best-new-restaurants-in-america.) Kind of a big deal. Also, Issac Becker, the owner and executive chef has been awarded the “Best Chef – Midwest” award by the James Beard Foundation. If you know anything about food, James Beard Foundation is kind of a big deal.
I finally got the chance to go, when one of my friends from NYC was in town. I was nothing but impressed from the second I walked in the door. The dim lit atmosphere is sophisticated, business casual and bustling with people. You can tell it is a popular spot which definitely requires a reservation if you don’t want to wait. The menu is quite large, offering a large selection of pastas and entrees in two different portions to encourage sharing or “family style.” I had heard the Gnocchi with cauliflower and orange (sounds strange I know) was a favorite to many so I tried that and the Caprese salad to start. Of course, accompanied by a good glass of Pinot Noir.
It was amazing. Truly, so delicious. The caprese salad was the best I have ever had. The mozzarella cheese was extra creamy and topped with sugar which I had never tried before. The Gnocchi lived up to expectations and had a very unique flavor. On top of the food, the service was great. Even though it was a busy place, our food was prepared quickly. No complaints.
Overall my experience at Bar la Grassa was fabulous. I am excited to try the other restaurants owned by Isaac Becker; 112 Eatery and Burch. Here is the link to the website, take a look http://www.barlagrassa.com/. Next time you’re going out to eat, plan ahead and make a reservation at Bar la Grassa!
