Fall. Who doesn’t love it? The dog days of summer have come and past, and the brisk weather rolls in. Boots, scarves, blankets, football, pumpkins, squash, candy corn and of course…. APPLES! If you don’t like a good apple, you are crazy.
Every year, during the peak of the leaves changing in first weekend in October means one thing in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Applefest; a festival dedicated to the Apple. Bayfield, is a beautiful little summer town right on Lake superior. The streets fill with fair food, apple everything, small local vendors, live music, rides and hungry apple lovers. It is a tradition in my family to go every year, it is something we all look forward to.
My absolute favorite apple treat is apple cider. I love, love the fresh crisp taste that is both sweet and tart that apple cider has. Nothing beats apple cider fresh from an orchard. I don’t do any other apple cider, unless it’s hard cider of course. Sipping warm beverages when it is cold out is always heavenly. Another apple favorite is the apple dumpling. It is a baked whole apple, cinnamon filling wrapped in pie dough, topped with warm caramel. It is my grandma’s favorite, and of course I started to get it too. Other apple favorites include: apple sausage, apple cinnamon doughnuts and caramel apples. Surprisingly I have never got apple pie from here. I prefer to buy a bag of apples and make one. I think it is trust issues I have with pies in general.
No matter your take on the Applefest, it is undeniable the worlds love of the apple. And nothing beats bitting into an apple this time of year. I will always remember my mom saying ” An apple a day…..keeps the doctor away.”
Here are some pictures from this year!
